Insurance law is a complex and ever-evolving area. Our Insurance Law Team has extensive experience providing legal advice on insurance issues - from policy cover to insurance disputes. We act for both insurers and policyholders.

We have particular experience in dealing with property insurance and liability claims. Our team has represented clients in property claims following the Christchurch, Canterbury, and Kaikoura earthquakes, including related defective repair claims.

Our team are able to assist with a variety of matters, including:

  • Property insurance.

  • Professional indemnity insurance.

  • Public liability insurance.

  • Statutory liability insurance, including health and safety investigations.

  • Directors' and Officers' liability insurance.

  • Business interruption insurance.

  • Litigation, dispute resolution and mediation in relation to all insurance matters.

Notable experience:

  • Successfully representing the policyholders in New Zealand’s leading case on the obligations of insurers relating to remedial works to a damaged property under a house policy (Sleight v Beckia Holdings Ltd [2020] NZHC 2851; [2022] NZCA 208).

  • Acting for numerous policyholders in relation to insurance claims arising out of the Christchurch and Kaikōura earthquakes, including associated defective workmanship claims for failed repairs.

  • Advising insurers and policyholders on whether claims are covered by insurance policy wording.

  • Being instructed by insurers to act for policyholders to defend negligence claims against them, including claims against lawyers, accountants, valuers, engineers and builders.
