Construction Law

Construction has been an integral part of the New Zealand economy for many years - especially since the nationwide housing and development boom. This sector is particularly relevant in Canterbury where following the earthquakes many buildings have been repaired or rebuilt.

Our Construction Law Team understand the pressure of a construction project for all involved, and the need for industry-specific and strategic advice. The construction process can be overwhelming -  and we aim to make these complex matters more understandable for you.

Our team are able to assist with a variety of matters, including:

Notable experience:

  • Acting for principals regarding the terms of construction contracts for various multi-unit terraced housing developments.

  • Advising on the terms of significant consultancy agreements in various major projects including the Christchurch Convention Centre, Canterbury Multi-Use Arena, Christchurch Metro Sports Centre and a school re-development in Queenstown.

  • Advising home-owners on the terms of residential build contracts.

  • Negotiating contracts and advising clients on insurer-managed repairs and rebuilds.

  • Acting for sub-trades to negotiate their contractual position regarding security and payments when contracting with a lead contractor.

  • Advising clients on disputes arising under construction contracts.

  • Acting for clients in adjudications under the Construction Contracts Act.

  • Advised clients on the NZS 3910 Construction Contracts Act during construction of Spark Square (Christchurch) and Invercargill Central developments.
