Landlords To Install Ceiling And Floor Insulation By 1 July 2019

Do your rental properties meet the new requirements under the law?

If you are the landlord of a residential property you have until 1 July 2019 to ensure your rental property meets the residential tenancy insulation requirements under the Residential Tenancies (Smoke Alarms and Insulation) Regulations 2016. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has advised that there will be no extensions to this date.

Landlords who do not comply with insulation requirements by 1 July 2019 may be liable for exemplary damages of up to $4,000.00 for each property that does not comply with the requirements. Landlords who still do not comply after paying the penalty could face further action from the Tenancy Tribunal which may include an order to pay further damages to the tenant and/or an order to carry out works to the rental property to meet the insulation requirements.
