Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Summer Clerk?
A summer clerk is a law student in their penultimate year of study. Summer clerks join SRB from mid-November to mid-February and spend time in each of our teams and practice areas. They receive hands-on experience and exposure to real-world projects.
What is a Graduate?
A graduate is a law student who has finished (or is about to finish) their degree at university. Once employed a graduate becomes a permanent member of the SRB staff, based in one of our practice groups. Graduates are known as Law Clerks until they complete their Legal Professional Studies (Profs) and are admitted to the bar.
Are high grades the be all and end all?
While a technical knowledge of the law is important, it is not the only skill you need to be a good lawyer. Your ability to relate to other people and be a team player is just as important. We pride ourselves on our firm culture and look for well-rounded staff to join our team. We’re keen to find out about what you get up to outside of work or study as well as your grades.
Will I have client contact?
Yes, we think it is important for you to have client contact so you have an opportunity to learn one of the most important aspects of practising law; interacting and dealing with clients.
What time commitment will you expect from me?
We encourage a healthy work-life balance and late nights and weekend work is not expected. For us it’s not about hours at your desk, it’s about efficiency.
Summer Clerk: Do I have the possibility of a graduate position with Saunders Robinson Brown?
Certainly. Past summer clerks have gone on to take up graduate positions at SRB. While being a summer clerk does not automatically mean you will be offered a graduate position, we view it as a potential pathway. If you demonstrate the skills, attitude and values we look for, and we have suitable roles available, we will discuss possible future opportunities with you.
Graduate: What training and support will I receive as a graduate?
You’ll be supported through a structured approach to professional development, including a senior Responsible Person to guide your career pathway, mentorship with lawyers whose expertise aligns with your interests, and opportunities to build your professional reputation. We also focus on sustainable development through realistic work expectations, peer and buddy support, and initiatives that help you grow confidently and progressively as a legal professional.
