Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day – What you need to know

Monday 26 September 2022 is now officially a one-off public holiday named Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day.

Schools will be closed on this day.  Trading is not restricted on Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day so some businesses may open.  However, it will not be a business or working day for the purposes of calculating periods of time for performing acts or complying with obligations, for example under deeds or contracts.

For employers and employees, Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day will be like any other public holiday under the Holidays Act 2003. This means that if Monday 26 September 2022 would otherwise be a working day for employees, they are entitled to a paid day off at their normal rate of pay.

If your business will open for trade on Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day, employees who work will be entitled to be paid time and a half their normal rate of pay. Additionally, employees who work that day are entitled to an alternative paid holiday on a different day, if Monday 26 September 2022 would otherwise have been a working day for those employees.

The entitlement to an alternative holiday does not apply to employees for whom Monday 26 September would not normally be a working day.
