Rural Law

Rural law involves the unique, sometimes messy, issues that face us living and working in a rural community. We have a strong background and extensive expertise in all rural law matters, acting for many of New Zealand’s leading dairy operations.

Our services include:

  • Preparing sale and purchase agreements including Further Terms of Sale that adequately protect the vendor or purchaser
  • Communicating with other professionals such as accountants and valuers to ensure all aspects of the transaction have been checked
  • Reviewing GST and other tax issues including checking that house and curtilage valuations are obtained if necessary
  • Checking that the agreement adequately provides for matters such as forestry, stock and plant, crops, irrigation, company shares/Fonterra shares
  • Attending to Overseas Investment Commission applications
  • Attending to settlement of sales in a manner that protects the vendor or purchaser
  • Leases of Farm Properties
    • Drafting leases
    • Checking leases
  • Subdivisions and Easements
    • Liaising with other land professionals such as surveyors
    • Co-ordinating the resource consent process and instructing specialists as required
    • Attending to easement and subdivision documents
    • Settling sale or purchase of subdivided properties
